Award season used to be a reason to be in Seoul in December. In 2026 that is no longer a safe assumption, and the reason is simple: the biggest shows have been leaving the country.

Where the 2026 season actually is

Where the main Korean music award shows are held in the 2026 to 2027 season The Melon Music Awards are in Seoul at the Gocheok Sky Dome on 14 and 15 November 2026, the first two-night edition. The MAMA Awards are in Osaka, Japan at the Kyocera Dome on 20 and 21 November 2026. The 41st Golden Disc Awards are in Hanoi, Vietnam in January 2027, with date and venue yet to be confirmed, the eighth edition held outside Korea. The 35th Seoul Music Awards were held at Inspire Arena in Incheon on 20 June 2026, off the traditional January slot. Two of the four are outside Korea. Two of the four are not in Korea, and the one that has always been in January happened in June.

MAMA runs on 20 and 21 November 2026 at the Kyocera Dome Osaka. CJ ENM announced it back in March, under the theme “Music Makes ONE”, with a worldwide stream on Mnet Plus. The announcement named no Korean event at all.

The Melon Music Awards are the ones that stayed. 14 and 15 November 2026 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, and for the first time in the show’s history it runs across two nights rather than one, under the slogan “K-POP CONNECT: The New Pulse”.

The Golden Disc Awards go to Hanoi in January 2027. That is the 41st edition and the eighth to be staged outside Korea, following Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Bangkok, Jakarta, Fukuoka and Taipei. Date and venue were still unconfirmed when this was written.

And the Seoul Music Awards, traditionally a January fixture, held its 35th edition on 20 June 2026 at the Inspire Arena in Incheon. If you were waiting for it in winter, it had already happened.

What that means if you are booking

The planning advice that circulates every autumn assumes a December cluster in Seoul. Check each show individually before you commit to dates.

For 2026 the Seoul date is in November, not December, and it is the weekend before MAMA rather than after. If you wanted both, you would be flying to Osaka in between.

Getting in is not a normal ticket sale

This is the part that surprises people who have bought concert tickets before.

For the Melon Music Awards, the organiser’s announcement pointed to pre-events, including Top 10 and category voting, with details published on the show’s official page rather than a ticketing site. That is the usual shape: access flows through the platform’s own voting and events, not a general on-sale.

The year-end broadcaster specials work differently again. KBS, SBS and MBC each stage one at the end of December, and their audiences are filled the way the weekly programmes fill theirs, which is covered in the music show guide. Short windows, small numbers, proof of purchase.

Where dates for those specials had not been announced when this was written, I have not guessed at them. Watch the broadcasters.

The honest alternative

If the point of the trip is seeing artists perform rather than watching trophies handed out, a concert is the better instrument. It is properly ticketed, announced in advance, purchasable from abroad and plannable, and the concert guide covers the name-matching rule that catches people at the door.

Award shows are worth building a trip around only once you have confirmed, from the show’s own channel, that it is happening in the country you are flying to.

The 2026 MAMA dates, venue, theme and worldwide stream are from CJ ENM’s own newsroom announcement dated 31 March 2026, which names Osaka and no Korean event. The Melon Music Awards dates, the Gocheok Sky Dome venue, the first two-night format, the slogan and the reference to voting and pre-events are from Korean press coverage of the organiser’s announcement on 9 June 2026. The 41st Golden Disc Awards going to Hanoi in January 2027, its status as the eighth overseas edition and the list of previous overseas hosts are from coverage dated 15 July 2026, which also records that date and venue were still to be confirmed. The 35th Seoul Music Awards date and Incheon venue are from Korean press coverage from June 2026. All checked on 15 September 2026; award season line-ups and dates move, so confirm on each show’s own channel before booking travel.

Common questions

Where is MAMA in 2026?

Osaka. CJ ENM announced in March 2026 that the 2026 MAMA Awards run on 20 and 21 November at the Kyocera Dome Osaka, in Japan, streamed worldwide on Mnet Plus. No Korean event was announced alongside it.

Which big award show is actually in Seoul?

The Melon Music Awards, on 14 and 15 November 2026 at the Gocheok Sky Dome. It is the first time the show has been spread across two nights, under the slogan K-POP CONNECT: The New Pulse.

What about the Golden Disc Awards?

Hanoi, in January 2027, with the exact date and venue still to be confirmed when this was written. It is the 41st edition and the eighth held outside Korea, after Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Bangkok, Jakarta, Fukuoka and Taipei.

Can I buy a ticket to an award show?

Not in the ordinary way for most of them. Access tends to run through voting and pre-events on the show's own platform rather than a general sale, and the year-end broadcaster specials fill their audiences the way the weekly music shows do.

Should I plan a December trip around award season?

Check where each show is before you book anything. The old assumption that award season means Seoul in December no longer holds, and in 2026 the main Seoul date is in November rather than December.
