Korea has two long-distance bus networks. They are not branded as one thing, they do not share a booking website, and they often do not share a terminal.

Getting that wrong is the classic failure: right city, right hour, wrong building, on the other side of the Han River.

Which is which

The express bus (고속버스) runs on expressways for the whole trip and does not stop at cities along the route. It is the fast, direct option between major cities.

The intercity bus (시외버스) uses expressways and national highways and does stop on the way. It is slower between two big cities and reaches vastly more places, which is the entire point of it. If your destination has no KTX station and no airport, this is usually how you get there.

Korea's two long-distance bus systems compared Express buses run expressway only with no intermediate city stops, are booked at kobus.co.kr which offers Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese, and also sell through Klook and Hanpass. Intercity buses use expressways and national highways and stop at cities en route, and are booked at bustago.or.kr or txbus.t-money.co.kr. Foreign-issued cards were enabled on express booking in August 2026 and on intercity booking from September 2026. The Tmoney Go app still accepts Korean-issued cards only. EXPRESS BUS Expressway the whole way No stops at cities en route BOOK AT kobus.co.kr also Klook, Hanpass Korean · English · Japanese · Chinese INTERCITY BUS Expressways and national roads Stops at cities on the way BOOK AT bustago.or.kr or txbus.t-money.co.kr reaches towns with no station Foreign cards: express from Aug 2026 Foreign cards: intercity from Sep 2026 The Tmoney Go app still takes Korean-issued cards only. Use the websites, not the app.
Two networks, two sites. The distinction decides your website, your terminal and sometimes your city.

The part that changed this autumn

Until recently a foreign card simply would not go through, and travellers worked around it by buying at the counter or not going.

Kobus started taking foreign-issued cards in August 2026, with no membership sign-up required, and the same capability for intercity reservations was aimed at September. The Korea Tourism Organization had logged 84 bus-related complaints during 2025, which is a small number that evidently landed in the right place.

If a guide tells you foreign cards do not work on Korean bus sites, check its date. Anything written before this summer was correct when it was published and is not any more.

The app that will still refuse you

One specific trap, because the obvious move is the wrong one.

Tmoney Go, the integrated transport app, continues to accept Korean-issued cards only. It looks like the natural place to book a bus and it is the one place your card will not work. Go to the websites instead.

Terminals, and why the ticket matters more than the map

Seoul does not have one bus station.

The Express Bus Terminal and Central City sit beside each other in Banpo, south of the river. Nambu Terminal handles intercity services. Dong Seoul, on the eastern side, handles both kinds. Different destinations leave from different buildings, and two buses to the same province can depart from opposite ends of the city.

So read the terminal name on your booking rather than searching the city for “bus terminal” and walking to the nearest result. Once you have the right building, the exit number is what gets you to the right door of it, and these complexes are large enough for that to matter.

Seats and timing

Both systems sell a standard seat and a more expensive one, described as premium on express services and luxury on intercity, with fewer and larger seats across the width of the bus. Both add a surcharge late at night.

The upgrade is usually worth it on anything over two hours, and it is still cheaper than the train on most routes. For where that sits against everything else you will spend, the daily budget guide puts intercity travel in context: a KTX ticket to Busan is roughly a fortnight of city transport, and the bus undercuts it.

When the bus is the right answer

When there is no KTX station where you are going, which is most of Korea.

The rail map is excellent and narrow. The bus network is the one that reaches the coastal towns, the mountain parks and the small cities, and it is the reason a Korean itinerary does not have to stop at the places trains happen to serve.

One caution on timing: around Chuseok and Lunar New Year the intercity network is the part of the country that jams hardest, and what is open over Chuseok covers the shape of that week.

The distinction between express and intercity services, the booking sites for each, the language support on kobus.co.kr, the bus classes and the four Seoul terminals are from the Korea Tourism Organization’s official English travel information, read on 15 September 2026. The dates for foreign-issued card acceptance, August 2026 for express bus booking and a September target for intercity, the absence of a membership requirement, the continuing Korean-card-only restriction on the Tmoney Go app and the count of 84 bus-related complaints in 2025 are from Korean press coverage in English dated 1 July 2026. Since the intercity rollout was a stated aim rather than a completed launch at that point, test a small booking before relying on it for a journey you have to make.

Common questions

What is the difference between an express bus and an intercity bus?

Express buses run on expressways for the whole journey and do not stop at cities along the way. Intercity buses use expressways and national highways and do stop en route. So express is the faster direct option and intercity reaches many more places.

Where do I book?

They have different websites. Express buses go through kobus.co.kr, which runs in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese, and are also sold through Klook and Hanpass. Intercity buses go through bustago.or.kr and txbus.t-money.co.kr.

Will my foreign card work?

Now, yes, and this is new. Kobus began accepting foreign-issued cards in August 2026, with no membership sign-up required, and the same option for intercity reservations was aimed at September. Anything written before that summer says it is impossible.

Is there an app that does all of it?

Not for you. Tmoney's integrated transport app, Tmoney Go, still accepts Korean-issued cards only, so the most obvious-looking app is the one that will reject your card. Use the websites.

Which Seoul terminal do I need?

Check your ticket rather than assuming. Seoul has the Express Bus Terminal and Central City next to each other in Banpo, Nambu Terminal which handles intercity services, and Dong Seoul which handles both. Different destinations leave from different buildings.
