Gasil Catholic Church was established in 1895 as the 11th parish of the Diocese of Joseon, with Father Ha Gyeong-jo of the Paris Foreign Missions Society serving as its first parish priest. The parish’s extensive jurisdiction includes 31 mission stations, and the current church and rectory were completed in 1924. The church’s patron saint remains enshrined there, though the building itself was converted into a hospital.
Priests from the Benedictine Order, who fled to South Korea due to the war, have been providing pastoral care for Gasil Catholic Church since 1952. A total of four locations—Hwanggeum-dong in Gimcheon, Yongpyeong, Toegang, and Waegwan—were formerly affiliated with the church before becoming independent parishes. As part of the centennial commemorative project in 1995, the current Shrine of the Holy Mother in Daegu was constructed, and stained-glass windows were installed to enhance the church’s sacred atmosphere.
