Famous art festivals that feature a city's name, such as the Verbier Festival, Salzburg Festival, Edinburgh Festival, and Avignon Festival, have played a major role in promoting the cultural and artistic image of those cities worldwide. To create a world-class music festival in Korea, Artistic Director Kang Dong-suk and the Seoul Metropolitan Government joined forces to hold the SSF under the title of 'Seoul' every year for about two weeks in April and May.

Since its inception in 2006, SSF has broken the prejudice that 'chamber music is difficult' and has expanded the horizons of audiences, becoming a representative music festival not only for Seoul but for all of Korea. Following the success of SSF, various chamber music festivals representing different regions and organizations have emerged. SSF is currently designated as a 'Seoul Representative Arts Festival' by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
