2026 Eunpyeong History & Folk Museum Special Exhibition: Universe of 1.5m
The walls of a Hanok are the baseline of our lives, where space (Woo 宇) and time (Ju 宙) meet. Although they were built to divide the inside from the outside, they never exceed 1.5 meters—the average eye level of a human. This low boundary, which hides the view but allows one to see beyond by simply standing on tiptoe, was the most human scale where restraint and consideration for others coexisted.
The gaze from within the wall expands into the macrocosm through "Chagyeong" (borrowed scenery), while the wall encountered from the outside becomes the face of a microcosm, condensing the unique narrative of that home.
Cha Jang-seop, a historian and photographer, has diligently recorded the interiors and exteriors of over 400 traditional houses across the country. Just as the people living in each house are different, the faces of the old houses captured in his gaze are diverse. Among these, we invite you to encounter the "walls" of the Hanok together.
Through this exhibition, we hope you rediscover the beauty of disappearing traditional walls and take a moment to rebuild walls of hospitality and communication toward the world, rather than barriers in the heart.
